“Understanding the difference is not that easy.”

The big question is about the difference between interior design and decoration. Both concepts are familiar, but it’s hard to differentiate them. Or rather, understanding the difference is not that easy. Of course, we know that both improve a space. But when the time comes, how do you know if you need an interior designer or a decorator?

Let’s start by knowing the definition of each of them. Because if we don’t know what they are, we can’t distinguish between them.

Sometimes it is more subliminal than conscious, but the environment matters.

The magic of the interior designer

The interior designer is responsible for bringing an environment to life. They change the architectural layout and make structural modifications to the space. It means that they work with the architect and, together, they deliver a complete product. They can knock down walls or move them. They also relocate electrical installations and re-organise the space on a structural level. In addition, they create a suitable environment for the project. They study the concept, create the identity and establish colours, textures and points of light. In short, the interior designer moulds the space to create a new element. They are wizards of space and form.

The decorator’s perspective

The decorator takes advantage of the space and dresses it up. So, the environment gets a new feel. Although they don’t transform spaces, they are able to imbue a totally new sensation to a familiar place. The professional decorator plays with spaces, colours and textures. They also optimise corners and create differences in the ambience of the same room. Unlike the interior designer, they aren’t trained to modify the layout. Nor do they work hand in hand with the architect. Instead, they do it afterwards on the basis of the established plans.

Now we have a brief idea about what each of these profiles does. Now, let’s look at the main differences between interior design and decoration.

Difference between interior design and decoration

The decorator is in charge of dressing the space. However, the interior designer transforms the space into something completely new. It includes moving the electrical structure and the walls according to the project. On the other hand, the decorator cannot be involved in these areas, and their work remains on a more visual level.

The interior designer needs formal studies that include structural components. It allows them to carry out projects in which they modify the space. The decorator doesn’t change the main features of the structure. Therefore, they don’t require studies related to this point.

A common goal

It is significant to know the difference between the work of both professionals. This way, we will choose the right professional according to our needs. important

However, it’s important to highlight that both have a common goal:

  • Understand and find the potential of the project.
  • Identify and make the best use of space.
  • Developing the personality of a room.
  • Create an environment that meets the client’s needs.
